The inspiration behind the showhouse sitting room at the 2018 Hamptons Designer Show House was a casual, “Slim Aaron’s” resort sitting room. The greatest challenges in this room were the lack of light and the asymmetrical window that looked out onto a concrete window well. I employed a few tricks to make space appear symmetrical and used faux boxwood to camouflage the concrete window well. To combat the dark lighting, the larger surfaces in the room, walls, ceiling, and floor were kept light — the walls had a lovely light aqua grasscloth and a light wool carpet with a very subtle pattern helped reflect the light. The color was sprinkled liberally throughout the room to help guide the gaze of the visitor and we mixed both new and mid-century furnishings, accessories and original art to give the space a pretty resort vibe. Bamboo and natural elements added a lush garden element that helped create bright and cheerful Hampton oasis.
